Building in togetherness.
This project started as a dream, almost 13 years ago, when Samara Visram realized that many students younger than her were unable to attend a Secondary School because there wasn’t a school in the Kikambala village. Unfortunately, this meant that many students who graduated from 8th grade were unable to continue on with their education. Samara has spent the last 13 years working with the community to design, fundraise and build the first secondary school in the village. The school began operation in January 2024, and the current built facility has a capacity for 270 students.

We have had a team of more than a hundred donors, countless people who have offered their time, support and expertise (this ranges from lawyers to accountants to tax consultants), 30 construction workers, 10 landscapers, 8 painters, 4 carpenters and artists and local artisans.
During the construction, we tried to ensure that majority of the people who worked on site and who were provided employment were from the Kikambala village. For example, we worked with a local artist (who painted all the paintings in the resource centre and admin) who was unable to attend a secondary school when he was younger because he couldn’t afford the transportation costs for a school further away. We also tried our best to ensure that all the materials we used to build were sustainable, with minimal plastic on site.
Thank you to the students who have filled the buildings with so much life, joy and hope for the future. This is all for you and because of you, and we are already so proud of you. We can’t wait to see all the incredible things you will achieve in the future. Thank you to the teachers who spend everyday nurturing the students and providing them with the care and education they deserve.
This school is a reflection of hope, dreams, and a collective desire to grow in togetherness. I hope this space will continue to bring the entire community together, from students, to children, to parents and elders. A space that is full of colour, play, laughter, new learnings and a place to truly believe that the world is your oyster.
Asante sana,
Samara
